Description Destination
The castle chapel of St. Stephen is located on a rocky ridge at the entrance to the Martell Valley, near the two castles of Unter- and Obermontani. The original manuscript of the Nibelungenlied from 1323 found there is kept in the Berlin State Library.
The Stephanus Chapel itself can be reached via a short hiking trail. A visit with advance reservation is worthwhile, because nothing about the outwardly inconspicuous Romanesque castle chapel suggests the magnificent Gothic frescoes that decorate the entire interior.
