Come with us on a journey of discovery through the centuries in the UNESCO World Heritage Monastery of St. John.
The monastery was founded in the 8th century. Charlemagne is said to have donated it; the statue in the monastery church is a lasting testimony to this.
The monastery church of St. Johann in Müstair contains the world's largest and best-preserved fresco cycle from the early Middle Ages. Carolingian and Romanesque paintings decorate the walls and the three apses.
The adjoining monastery museum is located in the Plantaturm, a residential and escape tower that is over a thousand years old, and shows twelve centuries of monastery construction and art history, a journey through 1200 years. The museum provides insight into the monastery and the life of the Benedictine nuns then and now. You can visit the cloister, the mighty cellar and the three upper floors with the representation and living, sleeping and prayer rooms. Archaeological finds, art-historical treasures and jewels owned by the monastery are also on display.
