Description Destination

From the town hall square of St. Michael | From Eppan the route passes the yellow primary school building and the Raiffeisenhalle. From there, the path is well signposted and winds its way in pleasant serpentines through deciduous forest and vineyards up to the Gleifhügel in half an hour. After exploring the various cuts and grooves as well as the Devil's Chair (a large dent left by the meltwater of the glaciers over thousands of years) located a little behind it, we head along the access road of the Gleifkirche towards Moos-Schulthaus Castle. Further south in the curve, the signposted hiking trail no. 15 turns right. On this path leading into the forest, the famous ice holes can be reached in half an hour. It is really impressive how, even on hot summer days, the vegetation and the air suddenly change and almost make you shiver. At an altitude of 500 metres above sea level, plants thrive here that are normally only found at 1,200 metres above sea level. This phenomenon can be explained by the nature of the terrain, as the area around the ice holes is characterized by porphyry debris. Warm air flows in through the upper openings of the blocks, cools down on the rock and exits again at the bottom as ice-cold air. After an extensive tour, we continue on trail number 15 until we reach Mendelstraße. This then leads downhill for about 500 meters along the sidewalk of Andreas-Hofer-Straße until you soon reach the new housing developments of the Obere and Untere Gand. A pedestrian promenade branching off to the left leads traffic-free past the cultural centre and school back to the starting point in the centre.
Shorten the tour and hike from the ice holes to the Stroblhof, from where you can quickly reach the town center.
