Description Destination

Route: As soon as we leave the cable car mountain station in Oberbozen (1,221 m), we turn left and turn left at the Hotel Post into the road leading downhill (signposted “Erdpyramiden”). Soon the road ends and we walk down a stony forest path (= former Kaiserstrasse) and along the edge of a meadow until we are close to the earth pyramids (walk to the end of the path because there are always new views; approx. 1,000 m, 40 minutes from Oberbozen). We return to the edge of the forest, turn left (sign “St. Jakob”) and reach the asphalted farm driveway. We hike uphill on this path and take the footpath to the left up to the church of St. James and St. George (1,111 m; 30 minutes from the earth pyramids). Then we return to the road and, on a steep forest path, reach the road on which we return to Oberbozen (45 minutes from St. Jakob).
Orientation and difficulty: It is an easy hike in every respect (approx. 240 m difference in altitude), the paths are well signposted. Be careful with wet leaves! Watch out for icy spots in winter!
Special features: The highest and most beautifully shaped earth pyramids in Europe can be found on the Ritten, in several places. Our hike takes us to those in the Katzenbachgraben below Oberbozen. Earth pyramids consist of cone-shaped clay and the boulders lying on top and often form bizarre landscape shapes. They can form in soils made up of late glacial moraine clay. These soils are rock hard when dry, but as soon as it rains they turn into a soft mush, slide and form steep slopes 10 to 15 meters high. Further rains wash out these slopes; However, if there are boulders in the softer earth material, the clay beneath these rocks is protected from the rain and as the surrounding material continues to be eroded by the weather, the majestic earth pyramids literally grow out of the ground. The largest and most beautiful pyramids take thousands of years to form. An earth pyramid can quickly be ruined if the capstone falls from the top of the pyramid: the material is then exposed to the rain and the column becomes smaller with each rain. And while one earth pyramid disappears through this process, the next one is already forming further up the slope.
The church of St. James and St. George is located in a secluded location on a wooded hill. It is important because of its frescoes from the 13th century and is a listed building. (Keys for the church are available at the tourist office in Oberbozen)

    By public transport from Bolzano with the Ritten cable car, where a gondola leaves the station every 4 minutes. After a 12-minute panoramic ride you will reach Oberbozen.
