Description Destination

With its distinctive conical shape, the Hohenstaufen is the landmark of the city of Göppingen. On the 684 m high mountain are the ruins of the Staufer family castle, which was built around 1070 and destroyed in the Peasants' War in 1525. There is a documented record of Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa staying "in castro stauff" in 1181. The Hohenstaufen is also the center of the "Staufer Road" cultural route.

On the mountain you can enjoy a fantastic view over the entire Göppingen district. You can combine this with a visit to the "himmel&erde" mountain restaurant, or spend a cozy evening with friends at the barbecue area on the summit. Discover the charm and panorama of Göppingen's local mountain for yourself - dare to climb it!

The Spielburg is located below the Hohenstaufen. Once the topmost limestone layer of the summit, today it forms a great vantage point with a rock height of 15 meters. The rock formation is embedded in a nature reserve and offers a breathtaking view over valleys and meadows. In good weather, the view even extends as far as the state capital. During the day, the idyll and peace can be enjoyed from the Spielburg, while in the evenings, romantic moments can be experienced under the starry sky.

If you don't just want to enjoy the view from the 684 meter high summit of the Hohenstaufen, but also want to learn more about its eventful history, the city of Göppingen offers you the opportunity to take part in a free guided tour once a month from April to November. The group always meets on the first Sunday of the month at 2 p.m. at the Staufer stele on the east side of the mountain plateau. Those interested can then take a guided tour of the Staufer exhibition at the Hohenstaufen.

    • Burgruine Hohenstaufen Highlights at the destination Exhibition "The Staufers"
      Exhibition "The Staufers"

This is where it all began. The name of a mountain became the name of a castle, became the name of a noble family, became the name of a dynasty, became the name of an era.

In the Hohenstaufen district of Göppingen, right next to the Barbarossa Church, the impressive history of the Staufers is presented in a concise and vivid manner.

Starting with the origins and homeland of the Staufers, topics such as knights and ministerials, Barbarossa on the imperial throne, the Staufers in the southern kingdom and the Crusades are presented. But life in the Middle Ages up to the Staufer cult of the 19th century is also presented in an exciting way.

      Admission is free.
