Description Destination Heeresgeschichtliches Museum / Militärhistorisches Institut
Austria's army and naval history under one roof
Military and war history, technology and natural science, art and architecture merge into a unique whole in the Military History Museum in Vienna.
The building was built between 1850 and 1856 as the centerpiece of the arsenal according to plans by Ludwig Foerster and Theophil Hansen, who thereby anticipated the style of Vienna's Ringstrasse. Moorish-Byzantine and neo-Gothic are the predominant styles.
Today, this oldest museum building in the city shows the history of the Habsburg monarchy from the end of the 16th century to 1918 and the fate of Austria after the collapse of the monarchy until 1945. The focus is on the role of the army and the military past on the high seas.

The First World War
A group of rooms redesigned in 2014 is dedicated to the First World War, which had such serious consequences for Austria-Hungary. It shows how this war became more and more extensive and costly. Poland, Serbia and Italy are the most important locations, and the role of women in the war is also examined. At the end, the path to collapse becomes clear. Wounded, prisoners and dead mark the path to the present. An example of the unique paintings from this period is the picture "The Nameless 1914" by Albin Egger-Lienz.
