Description Destination

Kaiserstraße is the former main street of Waldshut. Since the city was founded, the streetscape has hardly changed.
The small city stream flows through the middle of Kaiserstrasse. In 1869 the three fountains were removed and the stream was relocated to the side. But in 1988, when the pedestrian zone was built, it was placed back in the middle.
Today, Kaiserstrasse is a very diverse place. It can be a meeting place for friends, it offers many shopping opportunities and is part of the old town, with the Upper and Lower Gates as the approximate boundaries. Kaiserstraße is without a doubt the center of the city and is always popular for a short stroll.
The two districts of Waldshut and Tiengen, together with the ten idyllically located districts, form a diverse overall package for holidaymakers in the region. In Waldshut and Tiengen you will find two historic old towns that are completely different in their structure and are unique and beautiful in their own way. Stately homes, imposing gates, high towers, decorative churches and colorful murals leave a lasting impression. The ten smaller districts (Aichen-Gutenburg, Breitenfeld, Detzeln, Eschbach, Gaiß-Waldkirch, Gurtweil, Indlekofen, Krenkingen, Oberalpfen and Schmitzingen) are all located in wonderful, quiet nature and promise plenty of relaxation. On long hikes, leisurely walks or scenic bike rides you can switch off your thoughts and leave everyday life behind you.

    • Historische Altstadt Waldshut Highlights at the destination Upper Gate (Schaffhausen Gate)
      Upper Gate (Schaffhausen Gate)

The foundations of the gate date back to the 13th century. It served as the eastern city gate and contained the apartment of the tower guard on the upper floors, which gave him a view in all directions. During the Swiss siege of 1468, the “Upper Gate” was damaged. Until 1864, the rooms in the gate also served as a prison. In the first half of the 18th century, insurgents of the “Saltpeterer” movement from the county of Hauenstein were imprisoned here. On the outside there is now a partial coat of arms and a commemorative plaque from 1932. On the city side you can see the figure of the “Waldshuter Männles” from the 1960s, in Hotzenwald costume, which according to legend gave the city its name. Apparently the city fathers organized a kind of competition and offered a reward of ten gold guilders to the person whose name suggestion won. With the saying “I’ll put the money in my hat, the town shall be called Waldeshut.” he is said to have won the ten guilders for himself and thus named the town Waldshut. The “Upper Gate” can be visited as part of a city tour.

    • Historische Altstadt Waldshut Highlights at the destination Kaiserstrasse
      Kaiserstrasse

In the 13th century, the Kaiserstrasse was planned as a market street. Its townscape has remained largely unchanged to this day. In 1869, the three fountains in the street were removed and at the same time the town stream, which flowed through the middle of the street, was moved to the side. The street was previously called Vordergasse and later Hauptstrasse until 1906. In that year, the Wilhelminian council had a war memorial erected for the victims of the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71 and named several Waldshut streets after those honored on the memorial: Bismarck, Moltke - and the Kaiser. When the Kaiserstrasse became a pedestrian zone in 1989, the town stream was moved back to the middle of the street and three more fountains were erected.

    • Historische Altstadt Waldshut Highlights at the destination Lower Gate (Basel Gate)
      Lower Gate (Basel Gate)

The "Lower Gate", also known as the "Basel Gate", was badly damaged during the siege of 1468. Only the lower part and the north wall of the older building remain. Over the years, the "Lower Gate" underwent a number of structural changes. In 1690, a gable roof replaced the previous hipped roof. In 1864, the early modern tower clock was given an iron clock face. In 1920, the original entrance, which led to the first floor via a covered staircase, was moved to the gate passage. The notches of the drawbridge can still be seen on the outside of the gate today.
In front of the gate there is also the "Stone Bachelor", a sculpture by Guta von Freydorf. It has symbolically guarded the "Lower Gate" since 1989 and is a reminder of Waldshut's history, when the Association of Bachelors successfully fended off the Swiss siege in 1468. Before it was given its place in front of the “Unteres Tor”, it stood for a long time on the forecourt of Waldshut station.

    • Historische Altstadt Waldshut Highlights at the destination Catholic Parish Church of Our Lady
Catholic Parish Church of Our Lady

The current Catholic parish church was rebuilt between 1804 and 1808 by Sebastian Fritschi in the classicist style, using parts of the medieval choir and the sacristy from the 13th century. Originally, the "Upper Parish Church of St. Leodegar" (initially as a branch of the Stunzinger Church) was located here, later the "Assumption of Mary". On August 15, 1808, the patron saint's day, the blessing of the new church took place. The following Sunday, the church fair ("Chilbi") traditionally took place in Waldshut. This festival was later combined with an annual memorial for (among others) those who died in the siege of 1468, which originally fell on the Saturday before September 1. This is where the great Waldshut local festival, Chilbi, originated. The interior was designed by Johann Friedrich Vollmar between 1806 and 1812.

    • Historische Altstadt Waldshut Highlights at the destination Holy Spirit Chapel
      Holy Spirit Chapel

In the 15th century, the chapel belonged to the adjacent former hospital. Its appearance reflects the state it was in 1660. On the south wall is a copy of a painting of the "Isenheim Altar" by Mathias Grünewald. After the hospital moved, the "Holy Spirit Chapel", also known as the "Hospital Chapel", was used by the Protestant community until 1884. Later, in the 20th century, it was used as a storage room for a time. The chapel was reopened to the public after thorough renovation by the former members of the Junggesellenschaft 1468 Waldshut e.V. in 1985.
