  Benedictine Abbey of Maria Laach

  The abbey church is probably the most famous building in the Eifel. It is one of the most outstanding examples of German Romanesque church architecture. Count Palatine Henry II of Laach founded the monastery on the lake opposite his castle in 1093. Archbishop Hillin of Trier consecrated the church in 1156 and the last part of the church, the vestibule, the so-called Paradise, was completed around 1230. Over 30 monks still live in the monastery today. The abbey church is open all year round.

  Lake Laach

  The largest lake in Rhineland-Palatinate, the Laacher See, is located near the Maria Laach Abbey. The lake was formed around 12,900 years ago after a serious explosion of the Laacher volcano.
  The volcanic crater filled with groundwater and is now the only water-filled crater in Central Europe. When hiking around the lake, you can see carbon dioxide rising on the western shore. These bubbles still prove the volcanic activity of the region today.
  
  In addition to walks and bike rides, parents and children have the opportunity to swim in the lake in summer. The campsite at the Laacher See has a large lawn. The pedal boat and rowing boat rental is popular with families.

  Maria Laach Highlights at the destination Stone adventure trail

  Stone adventure trail

  The mascot of the Laacher See volcanic region, "Laachus", the floating pumice stone, accompanies the children along the 300 m long stone adventure trail on the monastery wall of Maria Laach and introduces them to volcanism with puzzles and child-friendly boards.
  
  In between, the rest area invites parents to take a short break while the children can let off steam with a hopscotch game and go on a journey of discovery through the legendary Laacher See volcanic region.
  
  At the end of the stone adventure trail, a souvenir photo can be taken with "Laachus" at a photo point.
  
  Laachus suitcase: The adventure game, the entire story of "Laachus" and his search for the answer to why he can swim, information cards and much more can be found in the Laachus suitcase. You can get this from the Maria Laach tourist information office.
