Description Destination
In the Nickel Museum, centuries of mining have left their mark in the midst of the impressive natural landscape. The smelting furnace in the Hopfriesen was built in 1840 and is the last remaining smelting plant for non-ferrous metals and is unique in the entire Eastern Alps region. The raw ore was crushed and processed in the Talbach crushing plant, and the charcoal required for roasting and smelting was produced at the Kohlstatt. There was a lot of activity around the smelting furnace in the Hopfriesen when the pre-roasted ores were melted. This important industrial monument brings a piece of the region's fascinating mining history back to life.
The Nickel Museum shows what was once made from the precious metal and what nickel is used for today: often invisible, but nevertheless indispensable. The broad spectrum of objects that have been and are made from nickel in the past and present ranges from tea chests to prosthetic legs.
For our youngest, a little mountain goblin named "Nicki" tells how the shiny silver metal came to be named after him. Throughout the exhibition, he points out those pieces where there is something especially for children to discover. “Nicki” brings the exhibition to life for young visitors and encourages them to conduct their own research.
Guided tours: every Wednesday and Friday from 9.30 a.m. to 1.30 p.m. (end of May to mid-October)

The museum
Nickel Museum Hopfriesen
The museum is a huge "walk-in display case". In it you can view the permanent exhibition "Roasted stones and pierced food". It impressively presents the mining history of the Schladming region. The central theme of the exhibition is the processing and use of the once and now extremely sought-after metal "nickel". The exceptionally dangerous work of the miners is brought to the attention of the visitor here.

Directions
From Schladming on the L722 Rohrmoosstraße to Rohrmoos. After about 2.5 km at the roundabout, take the 3rd exit towards Untertal/Obertal and take the L723 Untertalstraße to Untertal-Dorf. At the end of the small village, turn right towards Obertal - either to the car park at the Wehrhofalm or to the end of the asphalt road opposite the Holdalm.
Parking
Parking spaces are available in the Hopfriesen area near the Wehrhofalm (not serviced) and on the road near the Holdalm (not serviced). From the car parks, you can reach the Nickel Museum via the Schmelzofenrunde.
