Description Destination

Richard Wagner's house, Wahnfried, which he had built between 1872 and 1874 at the Hofgarten in Bayreuth and in whose garden he was buried after his death in 1883, has housed the Richard Wagner Museum since 1976. The National Archives of the Richard Wagner Foundation are housed in the Siegfried Wagner House, an outbuilding that Wagner's son Siegfried had converted into his own home in 1894. On a part of the property that had only been purchased by Winifred Wagner in the 1930s, a modern new museum building was built during the renovation of the museum from 2010 to 2015.
House Wahnfried
Life, work and creativity of Richard Wagner
Richard Wagner lived in Haus Wahnfried from 1874 until his death in 1883. Today, visitors to Haus Wahnfried can experience a documentation of Richard Wagner's life, work and creativity in this authentic, auratic location. The ground floor conveys the living environment and gives an insight into the time around 1880 and the everyday life of the family. Many friends and well-known personalities were guests here. In the basement, visitors can follow Wagner's working methods until the original score was completed. The “Interactive Score” in the adjoining room makes various aspects of the transformation of the musical text back into sound and music an experience.
New building
Performance history of the Bayreuth Festival
The new museum building was planned and built by the renowned Berlin architect Volker Staab. From the foyer with shop you enter the special exhibition hall. Generously glazed, the flexible area benefits from the atmospheric quality of the historic gardens. The permanent exhibition in the basement is dedicated to the performance history of the Bayreuth Festival. The unique collection of historical stage models, original costumes and stage equipment from the Festspielhaus will be presented.
Permanent and special exhibitions can be visited as part of a tour or separately. In the museum cinema, visitors can enjoy a varied film program.
Siegfried Wagner House
Ideological history of Wagner and the festival
The listed Siegfried Wagner House, built in 1894 by Wagner's son Siegfried, was inhabited by his wife Winifred until her death in 1980. The ground floor has been preserved in its original 1930s appearance and is fully accessible to visitors for the first time. You can see the fireplace room, the dining room and the garden room, which leads to the terrace with water feature and tea pavilion. Here, the ideological history of Wagner is presented, the close connection between Bayreuth and the Nazi dictatorship is illuminated and the personal relationships of the Wagner family with the National Socialists and with Adolf Hitler are documented.
