timeline
The Seisenburg fortress was first mentioned in documents around 1020. It was owned by the Dukes of Austria, who, however, mortgaged the property to a number of noble families, including the robber baron Nabuchodonosor Nankenreuter.

In the 17th century, the then owner Achatz Fenzl began to transform the medieval castle into a Renaissance palace. After changing owners (Engl zu Wagrain family, Spiegelfeld-Schneeburg family, Lederer family, Wilhering Abbey), the old walls and the approximately one hectare castle grounds became the property of the market town of Pettenbach in 2011.
The castle was inhabited until after the First World War; There was even a castle restaurant with a bowling alley. Afterwards, due to a lack of financial resources, this jewel in the Almtal valley unfortunately fell into total disrepair.
A detailed chronicle of the Seisenburg can be found in the castle and in the Bartlhaus.
All that remains of the once mighty Renaissance castle of Seisenburg is an overgrown pile of gravel with a hint of a ruined wall. As a result, a special tourist destination lost its importance.

At the end of the 1990s there was a positive development to preserve the remains of this cultural heritage. A group of committed people came together and enthusiastically began to uncover and restore existing wall foundations. They founded the Seisenburg Friends Association and have since been working painstakingly to preserve the remains of Seisenburg.
In this way, a small part of the former “guardian at the gate to the Alpine foothills” was preserved for posterity, and the Seisenburg once again became an attractive excursion and local recreation area.
The climb
From the village you take a forest road on the left to a game feeding station. There you can choose between the path or the comfortable forest road to reach the ruins. From here you have a beautiful view of Pettenbach and the Alpine foothills. A ‘Salettl’ (pavilion) in the midst of lush greenery offers protection from the weather and invites you to linger.
From the ruins you can take the same route back to Pettenbach, or take the wild and romantic Jägersteig to Magdalenaberg, and then back to the village.
The walking time is about 30 to 40 minutes.
