Description Destination

Welcome to Tirol Castle, the residence of the Counts of Tirol. The castle gave the state of Tirol its name. Here, aspects of the country's history and rulership are vividly combined. From Tirol Castle, you have an impressive view of the Etschtal and Vinschgau in the outer bailey. Here you feel as if you have been transported back to a distant time when the Counts of Tirol were the lords of this area.

The State Museum for Culture and Regional History offers all visitors an exciting and varied course. In no fewer than 15 exhibition rooms, permanent and themed exhibitions provide introductions to the central themes of medieval culture and history as well as recent regional history. But let's not forget that the main object is always the castle itself.

    • Schloss Tirol Highlights at the destination Palace portal
      Palace portal

The portals are the most outstanding examples of Romanesque architectural sculpture in Tyrol and are the cultural and historical highlights of the castle. They bring together many questions that still concern experts with regard to building history. The imagery of the palace and chapel portals, the former made of Lasa marble and the latter of Racines marble, draws inspiration from a widespread conception of the human interpretation of the animal world. This is about the fall of man and redemption; in the tense conflict between good and evil, good will triumph.
When looking at the portals, it is advisable to keep in mind the fundamental ambiguity of medieval symbolic language: certain figures, animal and plant symbols can be carriers of one message, but also of an opposite message. So the lion can represent both Christ and the devil. The ivy on the doorframes is considered a plant of eternity that guarantees lasting memories. The portals of Tyrol Castle are a special feature not only in the Alpine region due to their very good state of preservation. Comparisons have been repeatedly drawn with the façade reliefs of San Michele in Pavia.
