Description Destination

The old hammer forge, today a museum gem, is located between the districts of Schafberg and Voithenberghütte in the valley of the Kalten Pastritz near the Czech border. This building with its hip roof was built in 1823 by Baron Zacharias Voith von Voithenberg. However, he did not operate them himself, but leased them to master hammersmiths. The hammer forge was also called a weapon forge, which does not mean that it manufactured war materials, but rather all cutting tools for everyday agricultural and craft work.
The heyday lasted until the turn of the century. As industry developed more and more on the Rhine and Ruhr and the inner-German customs borders fell, things became quieter in the valley of the Kalten Pastritz. The last time the hammer sounded in the old forge was in 1926.
The forge used to have three water wheels: one for the hammer mill, which was rebuilt, one for the bellows and one for a large grindstone measuring 2.50 m high and 0.50 m wide, which could no longer be found. Here the equipment was cleaned and the cutting tools were sharpened.
After loving restoration by the local and traditional costume association "Pastritztaler" Schafberg
Furth im Wald e.V. since 1978, today the old hammer forge in the valley of the Kalten Pastritz presents itself to the visitor as functional again. In addition, in an exhibition room, you can examine numerous everyday objects made of metal, such as those that were once made in the blacksmiths that have been found everywhere in the Upper Palatinate since the Middle Ages.
A few years ago, the members of the traditional costume association came up with the idea of building a museum barn for old agricultural machinery and equipment near the hammer forge. In 2004, the opportunity arose to purchase an old barn from the nearby village of Schlammering free of charge. This was carefully dismantled and then rebuilt next to the hammer forge. The barn now houses relics that were no longer used by the surrounding farmers. In various departments, equipment and machines relating to soil cultivation, field work and harvesting, feed preparation, household and baking, beekeeping, weaving and spinning, fruit pressing and cider making, mechanical and motorised work equipment and forestry work can now be viewed. A small workshop with tools and drive systems from a wheelwright and carpenter's shop is also set up there. A picture exhibition with old views of the town and houses of Schafberg and the surrounding area as well as the former working life round off the tour in this lively museum barn.
