Description Destination

The Weltmuseum Wien is one of the most important ethnographic museums in the world and is located in the newest part of the Vienna Hofburg on the Ringstrasse. In 14 newly designed and distinctive exhibition rooms, the cultural diversity of content, stories and ways of life is presented in an entertaining way using unique cultural treasures from all over the world. The museum's highlights date back to over 500 years of collecting by the Habsburgs - they include pieces from the Kunstkammer of Emperor Rudolf II, the unique ancient Mexican feather headdress "Penacho", the world-famous collection of James Cook and objects from voyages of discovery and research in the 19th century.
The gallery of the breathtaking columned hall also leads to two collections of the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna: In the Court Hunting and Armoury Chamber you will find magnificent armour and ceremonial weapons that bear witness to knightly life and commemorate important events at court. The collection of old musical instruments presents original instruments of the greatest composers, such as Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven.

    • Weltmuseum Wien Highlights at the destination Two court dwarves
      Two court dwarves

The two unique figures are among the oldest works of art from the Kingdom of Benin and are considered the finest examples of the early courtly art style due to their lifelike naturalism. They probably originally stood on a royal ancestral altar. Since court dwarves were not part of the standard inventory of such shrines, it can be assumed that these are depictions of historical figures who played an important role in the reign of a 15th century ruler.

    • Weltmuseum Wien Highlights at the destination Feather headdress
      Feather headdress

The most prominent piece is the famous feather headdress with hundreds of long quetzal feathers and more than a thousand gold plates. This headdress is the only one of its kind that has been preserved and is now considered an icon of the Weltmuseum Wien. From 2010 to 2012, extensive research into its history was carried out in a cooperation project between Mexico and Austria and it was cleaned and preserved at great expense.

      Feather cape

This rare Munduruku feather cloak comes from the collection of the zoologist Johann Natterer, who traveled the country as a member of the Austrian Brazil expedition from 1817 to 1835. His ethnographic collection is the most important and extensive from this period. To this day, it determines the focus of the South American holdings of ethnographic collections from Amazonia. Archaeological cultures and folk art are also represented, with the regional focus here being on the Andean region.

    • Weltmuseum Wien Highlights at the destination Buddha Shakyamuni
      Buddha Shakyamuni

The elaborately crafted metal statue with a dedicatory inscription in Tibetan, Chinese and Manchurian shows Shakyamuni on the lotus throne. With the gesture of "touching the earth" depicted here, Shakyamuni averted the temptation of the demon shortly before his enlightenment. Statues of the founder of the religion, Siddharta Gautama, Prince of Shakya (around 560 - 480 BC) are also popular in East Asia.
