Description Destination
Freienfels Castle was built at the end of the 13th century as a compact fortification. In the 15th century, the residential building was added and converted into a residential castle. In the 17th century, under the last residents of the castle, further reconstruction work was carried out. From the middle of the 18th century, the castle was left to decay by its then owners, the Counts of Nassau. It was not until the beginning of the 20th century that the first renovation work was undertaken. The castle was opened to visitors in the 1960s and taken over by the Association for the Preservation of the Freienfels Castle Ruins in the 1990s.
Since then it has been lovingly renovated and maintained. The necessary financial resources come from the income from the annual Freienfels Knights' Tournament, one of the oldest and largest medieval events in Germany.
The main room of the residential building, the so-called Palas, is now used by the municipality of Weinbach for weddings. The tower room houses a small castle museum. Here you can find items found in the castle as well as kitchen utensils, clothing and weapons from the Middle Ages.
Freienfels Castle is located on the Lahn-Camino section of the Way of St. James and is open all year round during the summer months. In addition to the castle courtyard, the castle cellar and the keep (tower) can be visited. While the castle courtyard is almost barrier-free, stairs lead to the cellar and the keep. The castle museum is only open irregularly. The opening times can be found on the website www.freienfelser-ritterspiele.de. Guided tours are offered for groups.
