As part of the MUT and thus of the University of Tübingen, the Museum of Ancient Cultures at Hohentübingen Castle is the only university museum in the world with exhibits from two UNESCO World Heritage sites. It has also recently been given a world record entry in the Guinness Book of Records: In addition to the 40,000-year-old and thus oldest figurative works of art by mankind, the oldest musical instruments and evidence of religiosity, you can also visit excavations of the World Heritage wetland settlements - the pile dwellings - and the oldest giant barrel in the world from 1549 - the latter only in the winter months.
In the museum you will also find the famous “Tübingen Arms Runner” in one of the most outstanding and extensive university collections of classical archaeology, as well as ancient Egyptian objects that are unique in Europe – such as the approximately 4,500 year old sacrificial chamber of Seschemnefer III. from Giza or the coffin of Idi, unique in Europe, with its perpetual star clock. Finally, you can discover the cuneiform texts of ancient oriental studies from the early days of writing, which are up to 5,000 years old, or in the Ethnological Collection in the so-called “pentagonal tower” you can see the rare Malanggan carvings from the South Seas (New Ireland) and the impressively large vessels of the Shipibo from South America.
