A brief introduction to the Werratalmuseum
Gerstungen Castle, a former official residence, houses a variety of exhibits on the history of the region in 22 vividly designed rooms.
In addition to the permanent exhibitions on geology, prehistory and early history, the folklore exhibition, railway history and Werra ceramics, special exhibitions on specific topics are held every year. This year an exhibition on the history of the Second World War and the 30th anniversary of German reunification took place.
The geological collection
It gives the visitor an overview of geological ages, periods, epochs and evolution of the earth and shows the nature of the formations and the occurrence of mineral resources.
Under the title "Stone-rich Werra", mineralogical finds are presented, among others: Silicified wood and fossils from the river floodplain are on display. Photos and display boards provide interesting information about the formation of the Werra landscape. The well-known geologist Dr. Friedrich Moritz Stapff, builder of the first St. Gotthard Tunnel, is honored at a special location in his birthplace.
The collection of prehistory and early history
The Gerstungen Basin has been almost continuously populated since the Neolithic period. The numerous Neolithic tools found as well as finds from Iron Age settlements such as ceramics, urns, jewelry, etc. can be viewed.
The Folklore Collection
A considerable part of the exhibition is devoted to the development of crafts. The diversity of regionally typical craftsmen's professions is documented with guild chests, guild and craft books from the 17th century, handicraft products and tools.
The centrepiece of the exhibition is the extensive collection of rural Werra ceramics.
Rural life in the utility rooms, barn, kitchen and living room is impressively recreated and also brought closer to the child viewer.
Local history
The history of the town of Gerstungen and the region can be traced through various focal points, such as the first documented mention, the peasant uprisings of the Werrahaufen, the development of the potash industry and the emergence of the association system. The history of the railway is presented in detail.
