All single mothers will now agree with me: a day with two small children at the indoor swimming pool is an experience in itself.
The indoor pool instruction
When I go to the indoor swimming pool with my kids (5+3 years), the rules are set in advance: No one goes anywhere alone – no matter whether to the next pool or just to the toilet.
The older one accepts this with a defiant look and the younger one grumbles briefly – but then resigns himself to his fate – after all, it's off to the indoor swimming pool!
The dilemma of water wings
My two kids are absolute water rats, or actually underwater rats. Once they're in the pool, all you see is their water wings and bottoms sticking out of the water - it's amazing how long they can hold their breath!
But what do you do when the little one runs excitedly to the water while you're still putting the big one's water wings on? You do a somersault and pull him back to the surface. In full gear, of course, with a bathrobe and flip-flops - what can I say? He thought it was funny.
Unexpected acquaintances
The eldest really wants to jump from the 1m tower, after all, the children in kindergarten do that too. But I absolutely have to catch her.
Not two seconds later – the little one wants to too.
My attempts to explain that I can't go up at the same time as him and then catch him in the water fail miserably. In his euphoria he storms over to an older lady and asks excitedly if she can accompany him to the diving board. Open up the floor!
Luckily, Lotte has grandchildren of her own – as I later find out – and is delighted that he spoke to her.
So there he is standing at the tower - with Lotte's hand in one hand: "And you're really going to catch me, Mommy?!" After I've said yes about 100 times, he jumps towards me.
I pull him to the surface faster than his water wings could manage.
He looks at me, astonished, with wide eyes. So - that's enough to satisfy his enthusiasm for jumping for today.
"Again again!"
Now it's me who's looking stupid.
The end of the story: I stopped counting how many times the two of them jumped. At the end, Lotte even offered to come back the next time I go to the indoor pool with my water rats.
This took me so by surprise that all I could do was stammer out a thank you.
In the evening, the two of them crawl onto the couch and snuggle up to me. Exhausted, but happy and exhausted. I have to smile blissfully because I know that we have created memories together today.
