Description Destination

An essential part of the culture.work.city in Neustadt b. Coburg is the Inner German Border Educational Centre (BIG), which, with a modern museum concept and up-to-date information, provides a comprehensive insight into the history of Neustadt with its cultural, economic and industrial development stages from the time of the world wars through the Cold War phase, the opening of the border and its innovations and consequences up to the present day.
How did the inner-German border come about? What were the problems with and at the border and how did they affect the lives of the people directly at the interface of the East-West power blocs? The INNER GERMAN BORDER EDUCATIONAL CENTER has developed a project day for schools and general youth work to keep the memory of the division of Germany and reunification alive. Within one day, life on both sides of the former “Iron Curtain” can be explored and perspectives on a common future for young people without borders can be developed. Due to the geographical location directly at the junction of the Coburg region with the Sonneberg/Thuringia region, there are striking places on the former border throughout the entire area and many relationships with people with experience of the GDR and the FRG. The aim is for young people from all over Germany to explore the history of the formerly divided Germany in a practical educational project.
