Description Destination

Today, the Eifel Museum with the exhibition areas EifelTotal and the German Slate Mine is located in the Genovevaburg Mayen.
During the summer months, the Mayen Castle Festival takes place in the castle courtyard.
In 1280, Heinrich von Finstingen, the Archbishop of Trier, had the mighty late Gothic castle built on the rocky summit of the "Kleiner Simmer". The fortress remained intact for 400 years until French troops occupied the city in 1689. They plundered the castle and town almost to its foundations.
In 1700, reconstruction began under Elector Hugo von Orsbeck, who commissioned his court architect Ravensteyn to restore the castle in the new Baroque style. Secularization according to the maxims of the French Revolution came into force in the first years of the 19th century.
On August 8, 1903, the Genovevaburg was auctioned off by the then tenant. The administrative building and the east tower were demolished as a quarry for building materials and in 1815 the outbuildings of the upper castle courtyard were also demolished.
However, the gradual restoration of the castle complex began as early as 1830.
In 1902, a catastrophic fire severely damaged the outbuildings of the lower castle courtyard and the keep. Since then, the Golo Tower has been missing its slate roof, the "Welsche Haube".
In 1918, Arend Scholten bought the castle and had it converted into a representative residence in its current form by the government architect Stahl.
In 1938 the city of Mayen became the owner of the entire castle complex. During World War II, the castle's lower courtyard and stable building were destroyed by bombs.
This was followed by the reconstruction and renovation of the castle, which lasted until 1984.
Parts of the castle can be viewed by visiting the EifelTotal and German Slate Mine exhibitions. On some days - when the castle festival is not taking place - the castle courtyard can also be visited.
