Description Destination
The Altötting Jerusalem Panorama was created in 1902-03 by Prof. Gebhard Fugel and fellow artists. It combines architecture, painting and stage design in a unique synthesis. "Panorama" means "comprehensive view". In a monumental circular building, the viewer is offered a panoramic view of the ancient city of Jerusalem and the surrounding landscape from a central podium. It culminates in the moving crucifixion scene on Golgotha. The pictorial representation, spread out on a giant circular painting of around 1200m², is part of an artistic spatial staging that includes stage design elements and a complex lighting direction. An imaginary image space is created that gives the visitor the feeling of being in the picture - allowing him to become a witness to the biblical story being depicted. In Germany, the Jerusalem Panorama Crucifixion of Christ is the only historical example of the 19th century. worldwide popular art form panorama.
