Description Destination

The State Museum is one of the most important archaeological museums in Central Europe. The extensive collection with more than 16 million finds includes numerous pieces of European importance, some of them even of global importance, such as the famous “Sky Disk of Nebra”, which forms the centrepiece of the completely redesigned permanent exhibition and is part of the UNESCO documentary heritage.
In the bright halls of the historic museum building, archaeologists have recreated scenes from the everyday life of the first inhabitants of Central Germany, enabling a varied journey of discovery to the roots of European human history. Extraordinary stagings create a realistic picture of Stone and Bronze Age life with wild cave lions and imposing mammoths, thoughtful Neanderthals, Ice Age hunting grounds, shamans, burial chambers, gold-rich princely tombs and, of course, the “Sky Disk of Nebra” (1,600 BC), the oldest concrete representation of the sky known to mankind. Thanks to its exciting discovery story, which is like a crime thriller, its mysterious astronomical and mythological symbolism, its timeless aesthetics and the shine of the gold, hardly any observer can escape the special fascination of this archaeological find of the century.
But even objects that seem inconspicuous at first glance sometimes contain small “treasures”: For example, the only verifiable fingerprint of a Neanderthal man to date has been preserved on a piece of birch tar – hidden in the ground for 80,000 years until lignite excavators and archaeologists brought the find back to light of day.
