The permanent exhibition “Castle Laboratory – Cradle of Biochemistry” in the historic castle laboratory conveys the great importance of Tübingen biochemistry from its beginnings to the present day. Historical equipment and preparations give an impression of laboratory work in the 19th century, while interactive media provide insights into modern biochemical research.
The focus of the presentation is Friedrich Miescher's original test tube containing nucleic acid, which has not been accessible until now. Miescher discovered the substance, which was only identified decades later as the carrier of the genetic material, at this location in 1869.
In 1818, the university set up a chemical laboratory in the former kitchen of Hohentübingen Castle, which soon became one of the world's first research facilities for biochemistry. Georg Carl Sigwart and Julius Eugen Schlossberger were among the pioneers of this field, which studies the chemical processes in living organisms, especially human metabolism.
Outstanding research was achieved in early Tübingen biochemistry during the era of Felix Hoppe-Seyler, who was appointed professor in 1861. He investigated the red blood pigment and gave it the name "hemoglobin". In 1869, his student Friedrich Miescher made the groundbreaking discovery in the castle laboratory of a substance that he called "nucleus" - today known as DNA and RNA, the carriers of genetic information.
In keeping with this tradition, the decision was made to make the historic castle laboratory accessible again from 2015: the Tübingen-based biopharmaceutical company CureVac financed the museum facility with funds from a European research prize. What Friedrich Miescher once discovered here is now the basis for pioneering research in Tübingen into novel immunotherapies against cancer and vaccines against viruses.
