Description Destination
The NAUTINEUM has been located on the small island of Dänholm between Stralsund and Rügen since 1999. This location of the German Oceanographic Museum Foundation houses original large exhibits from fishing and marine research. Part of the exhibition is an authentic fisherman's shed, which served the coastal fishermen of Western Pomerania around 1980 as a workshop, office, warehouse and lounge. In the field of German marine research, devices for determining soil samples, salinity, temperature and water depth can be discovered. Other collection pieces show the beginnings of deep-sea fishing in Germany and convey the history of former German whaling. A special original object is the walk-in underwater laboratory HELGOLAND, which is still considered an outstanding technical pioneering achievement in engineering. Immediately next to it, the unusual architecture of the 14-meter-high boat hall, which houses the Zeesboot STR9 and beach boats of the Pomeranian coastal fishermen, is striking. A model boat collection with 35 true-to-original and hand-made replicas made of oak wood in a scale of 1:15 also found its home in the boat hall. The NAUTINEUM will remain closed to guests in 2022.
