At Altenfelden Zoo, no two days are the same – with over 1,000 animals in more than 200 species ensuring this. With this large number and an area of 80 hectares, it is the largest private zoo in Austria. Exotic animals, such as the fastest land predators in the world, feel just as at home in the Mühlviertel as old domestic and farm animal breeds.
Hunting culture museum “cultum venandi”
The hunting culture museum “cultum venandi” in the zoo center is intended to introduce visitors to the history, culture and tradition of hunting. Over 80 exhibits and information boards can be viewed in the museum: the development of hunting from the Stone Age to the present day can be read about, as well as hunting laws and facts about hunting. Curious trophies, rare rarities: among others, a hunting knife belonging to Emperor Franz Joseph, old and new hunting weapons are also on display. Everything related to falconry, hunting language and the importance of hunting dogs has also found its place in the new museum. A highlight is a lifelike replica of a local landscape with many taxidermy animals. Or you can follow the trail of myths and legends, learn more about the hunting gods and immerse yourself in a fairytale world.
Owl Trail with Owl Nature Trail Semita Noctua
The new owl trail with educational path “Semita Noctua” is intended to give visitors and especially school groups an insight into the life of the local owl species using information boards. With the renovation of the owl aviaries, the species protection program in the Altenfelden Zoo was also launched: “Reintroduction of the Ural Owl in Austria”.
Wonderful hiking
See and hike: Nestled in the hills of the Upper Mühlviertel, the area is incredibly scenic. There are two different hiking trails. The smaller tour takes about 2 hours and is designed so that you can pass all the animals. It is even easy to navigate with a stroller and dogs are also allowed to walk along, provided they are kept on a leash. For hiking enthusiasts there is a longer circular route with a walking time of 4 hours. This leads through a gate into the small Mühltal and to the Rabenstein, a rock formation that is second to none. There is also the possibility to take a slow train from the center to the parking lot.
Children’s attractions – Mega playground
The playground area is particularly large and full of adventure. It is located in the center of the site. Near the large beer garden or buffet, parents always keep an eye on their offspring.
