Description Destination
Two museums under one roof await visitors at the Weilburg Mining and City Museum. What you cannot see in the more than 300-year-old baroque building is the show mine underneath. Over a length of 200 meters you can see mining, conveyor systems, shaft and tunnel construction with original machines ready for operation. The exhibition on the ground floor shows mining in the region: iron ore, slate, phosphorite and marble mining and clay extraction.
The entire first floor is dedicated to the city’s history. From the first mention in 906 to the present day, the tour spans a chronological period with exhibits, pictures and explanatory texts. Here we meet Conrad, the first German king, as well as the first president of the Frankfurt National Assembly, Heinrich von Gagern.
A display library presents precious books from past centuries. Here you can see, among other things, one of the few complete collections of Merian engravings from the 17th century.
“Small Cabinet” - A room for special exhibitions: A new exhibition every 6-8 weeks: pictures, sculptures, historical items, exhibits from the Chinese Paper-Cutting Museum Weilburg or from our extensive collections and foundations.
