The Bohnenberger Observatory on the castle has been restored and can be visited again!
The University of Tübingen MUT Museum has now been given the museum use of the historically significant observatory of Johann G. F. Bohnenberger at Hohentübingen Castle. This is all the more significant as the small observatory was built 200 years ago specifically for the so-called “Reichenbach's repetition circle”; a device that was able to be returned to its original location after 16 years. The repetition circle only exists a few times worldwide, for example in Florence, Milan or Paris. However, only in Tübingen does the historically unique ensemble of original equipment and a specially constructed building exist, which also represents the oldest ground observatory in the world. The renovation was completed in September 2018 – just in time for the 200th anniversary of the Württemberg state survey, which had its origins at this location.
We are very happy and would like to thank all authorities, architects, restoration experts, cooperation partners and fellow campaigners in the renovation of this fantastic place! This represents another major step for MUT to gradually make the important historical, scientific and cultural-historical rooms, collections and sites available to the public. In addition to the outstanding collections in the Museum of Ancient Cultures, these include the Tübingen Castle Laboratory as the cradle of biochemistry or the world's oldest giant wine barrel in the castle cellar and this observatory.
The wooden doors and shutters of the observatory provide a view of the interior during the museum’s opening hours:
