Description Destination

In the 12th century, Gamburg ob der Tauber on the Romantic Road was a fiefdom of Mainz and the residence of the noblemen of Gamburg. Its originally Romanesque hall building is one of the most representative of the German High Middle Ages. The “Barbarossa frescoes” in its culturally and historically unique main hall are considered to be the oldest secular wall paintings north of the Alps (around 1200). These only surviving original murals of a knight's hall are artistically innovative and show large-scale scenes from the crusade of Emperor Frederick I with one of the earliest inscriptions in the German language and much more. They were discovered in 1986 together with exceptionally magnificently decorated double arcades from the Staufer period. The hall itself originally even had underfloor heating. Since 2001, the Gamburg has been listed as a national monument.
The castle, which has been inhabited since its construction, has never been destroyed in its history, thanks in part to its rescue by Götz von Berlichingen during the Peasants' War. In connection with his kidnapping of the bailiff of Gamburg, the famous “Götz quote” was even made. Since 1546, the Gamburg has been privately owned by the nobility.
During World War II, the keep served as a bunker for the storage of several Frankfurt museums as well as for files on the communist resistance groups known as the “Red Orchestra”. It was also used for a time as a water reservoir for the castle park.
This baroque garden, laid out on an artificial terrace, with its nymph fountain, its atmospheric lighting concept and its botanical rarities, is unique in Germany as an integral part of a castle complex. Over the last few decades, it has been revived and developed based on old models and benefits from the particularly mild climate of the lovely Tauber Valley and the foothills of a nearby nature reserve.
The same goes for the café in the castle courtyard, which is decorated with statues and coats of arms, and whose palm trees and other exotic plants exude a Mediterranean flair with their wonderful scents in season.
The castle chapel and the registry office's coat of arms room offer a wonderful setting for weddings. Likewise, parts of the complex can be used for conferences, parties, etc. be hired.
The castle shop “Zum Melusinenbad” is located in the old washhouse.
The Melusinen legend of the Gamburg Eulschirbenmühle as well as a separate story about over 21 ghosts and other haunted apparitions are connected to the Gamburg. This special cultural monument is continually being revisited by writers, researchers and tourism professionals.
Today, the Mallinckrodt family, the owners, is committed to researching, animating and ensuring the lively continuity of the castle and its park. The Gamburg can be visited during regular opening hours every weekend and public holiday of the season or as part of a guided tour. Guided tours are also possible outside opening hours upon request. In addition, numerous events and courses are offered.
