Description Destination
A naturalistic model of the castle was made in autumn 2013 on the initiative of the beautification association "Unser Schärding" by restorer Hartmut Weinast on a scale of 1:100 - based on historical engravings and drawings by Johann Lamprecht (1816-1895). The model is presented on the 1st floor of the Granite Museum.
History of the castle
The first brick fortification dates back to the Babenberg Duke Leopold VI, the Glorious (around 1225). The castle was later strengthened, rebuilt and expanded by Duke Ludwig VII of Bavaria-Ingolstadt, the Bearded, around 1430 and other Bavarian and Austrian dukes. In the 17th century. It was converted into a residence for the Prince-Bishop of Freising, Albrecht Sigismund von Wittelsbach, who, however, never came to Schärding. The building was destroyed by fires (1724 and 1775) and the French bombardment (1809). While the outer castle area was rebuilt, the inner castle fell into disrepair. Only a few remains (vaulted cellars, outer castle gate, part of the ring wall with enclosure and inner moat) have been preserved. The fountain was reconstructed in 2003 based on a picture from 1499.
Music from the castle's heyday (15th - 17th centuries) is available on site at the Tonspielstelle.
