Description Destination
…it is located within the former city walls of Hersbruck’s old town. It is housed in a former farmer's house dating from 1524, with a southern-style dock gallery. The picturesque ensemble also includes the former barn of the neighboring building, which closes off the romantic inner courtyard, and the neighboring half-timbered house with garden in the city moat.
The Shepherd Museum is the only museum in Germany dedicated to one of humanity’s oldest professions. Numerous historical exhibits and depictions tell of the simple life of the shepherds in Franconia and in many other parts of the world. The exhibition includes, among other things, tools, everyday objects and handicrafts of the shepherds as well as typical regional clothing and also gives an overview of shepherding worldwide. In addition, a permanent museum didactic exhibition highlights the coexistence between humans and farm animals at numerous hands-on stations. An interactive concept covering around 250 m² makes it "tangible" how people have benefited from the animals kept in their homes for thousands of years. Other topics in this exhibition area include: animals as suppliers of raw materials such as milk, meat, leather, wool and feathers, the total utilization of a cow in our time, and stable keeping and feeding over the course of time. Audio stations, film contributions and numerous stations that tempt you to try things out make a visit to the museum a real experience for young visitors too.
Special exhibitions
Several times a year, changing special exhibitions on all collection areas such as shepherding, crafts, everyday culture and art enrich the museum visit.
Traditional museum festivals
Three major festivals a year prove to be real visitor magnets in the German Shepherd Museum – starting
with the traditional Shepherd's Day, which always takes place on January 6th. On the first Sunday in May there is the Sheep Festival, which has long been celebrated in medieval style, and on the last Sunday in September there is the craft market, with many demonstrations of now extinct professions.
