No skills can exist without the knowledge of the ancients, and no survival of ancient arts and crafts can occur without their application in the present.
Our Grave Cross Museum conveys the centuries-old symbolic language of grave crosses as a piece of cultural history and Alpine sepulchral culture. As early as the 1960s, the brothers Manfred Bergmeister and German Larasser began collecting wrought iron grave crosses. In 2002, company founder Manfred Bergmeister decided to set up a private museum in the old workshop rooms of the Bergmeister art blacksmith shop in Ebersberg in order to make the collection, which had now grown to around 500 pieces, accessible to the public.
This collection is the largest of its kind and unique in its composition. It is a link between craftsmanship, folklore and art history.
The oldest objects in the collection are works from the early Renaissance, the most recent are contemporary designs. The Grave Cross Museum thus represents around 500 years of grave culture and craftsmanship.
