Description Destination

The local history museum, established in Pragstein Castle in 1932, is part of the Mauthausen Castle Museums and is one of the oldest of its kind in Upper Austria.
The two rooms on the second floor present the highlights of the collection. They shed light on the eventful history of the old Danube market and its economic development. In addition, the collection becomes a starting point for a contemporary discussion of the concept of “home”.
The transfer of knowledge is supported by a multilingual audio guide system (D, E, I, CZ, children's track) and modern media technology.

The first room presents the highlights of the collection in the form of thematic groups – from the spectacular archaeological finds from the quarries such as the mammoth tooth to the precarious proximity to the concentration camp to the history of the local history association and its collection. How was “home” collected and presented? In a place like Mauthausen, the question of home and identity arises in a special way. Variable areas allow for continuous updating of the exhibition and an active engagement with the concept of “home”.
The second room is dedicated to the economic development of the place:
The Danube as a transport route, salt as a trading commodity and the granite deposits had a lasting impact on the history of Mauthausen.
The Chamber of Rarities on the 3rd floor contains a small exhibition about the famous Mauthausen artist Prof. Hans Gerstmayr ("Steyrer Stahlschnittschule Blümelhuber-Gerstmayr"). You will also find various collections (watches, minerals, ...) as well as an exhibition of domestic and exotic hunting trophies from private collections.
