With the emergence of the button industry in the second half of the 19th century, the town developed into an important industrial center in the Altenburg region. At the height of this industrial development, there were at times as many as 29 button factories. Schmölln became a "button town" with global sales markets. At that time, Schmölln was even the world market leader in ivory nut button production.
