Description Destination
The Weiler Agricultural Museum is located in a romantic courtyard behind the historic Stapflehus. It is housed in a barn that is over 200 years old and reflects the original village character of the Altweiler district.
The fact that the railway town of Weil am Rhein has an agricultural museum may surprise visitors, but in fact agriculture was the source of income for the Weiler population until the turn of the century. In addition to livestock farming and dairy farming, the cultivation of fruit and vegetables and viticulture secured the income of small farms.
When the railway and industry came into being in Weil around 1900, agricultural production declined rapidly: only 10% of the population was employed in agriculture at that time, compared to 3% in 1949.
The Agricultural Museum, inaugurated in September 1990, is set in authentic surroundings and documents rural working and everyday life in the 19th century. Plough and harrow, a rattling potato harvester, Büggi, treadmill and grape mill, the "Schürki cart" of the market women and carriages for the lords, laundry mashers and washboards, flax breakers, milk centrifuges and numerous equipment and tools for haymaking and threshing show the diversity of everyday agricultural work.
Many exhibits are accompanied by large-format photos from the turn of the century, which document excerpts from the everyday and working life of the hamlets at that time.
When the barn was renovated, the division of the threshing floor, feeding corridor and stable, which is typical for agricultural buildings, was retained; a wooden staircase leads to the upper two threshing floors, which are also used as an exhibition space.
The showpiece of the collection are the approximately 50 enamel signs from agricultural advertising from yesteryear.
