Description Destination

The history of the border town of Weil am Rhein was largely shaped by the textile industry between 1880 and 1982. With the establishment of the first dyeing plant in 1880, the foundation stone for the industrial location of Weil am Rhein was laid. The image of the Friedlingen district was dominated by the huge shed halls with sawtooth roofs and the smoking chimneys of the boiler houses. The textile industry was for a long time the most important employer in the city and the region.
The Weiler Textile History Museum documents the history of the three large textile companies: the Schusterinsel Dyeing and Finishing Company, the Schetty Dyeing and Finishing Company and the Robert Schwarzenbach Silk Weaving Company, which was the last textile industry in Friedlingen to cease operations in 1982.
The museum is housed in the former workshop premises of the Robert Schwarzenbach silk weaving mill. In the metalworking and carpentry workshops, work history can be experienced with all senses. Both rooms have been lovingly restored with their historic machines from the early days, their transmission belts, tools, the characteristic smell of oil and numerous relics of the working world.
Between the saws, large drills and planing machines from the 1920s, Weiler's textile history between 1880 and 1982 is documented using objects and pictures. Aerial photographs show visitors the extent of the once flourishing industry. Tools, pattern books, shuttles, spools of thread, punch cards and pattern drawings are reminders of the textile era in Friedlingen.
The metalworking shop in the adjoining room was left in its original condition. The mighty steel processing machines are still bursting with power, every tool is in its original place. The transmission belts that drive the machines are still running perfectly. At major events in the Kesselhaus cultural center, the forge is fired and iron is forged.
In addition, the museum presents numerous special exhibitions ranging from historical to artistic themes.
