As a museum for modern and contemporary art with an extensive collection of works by Austrian and international artists from the 19th century to the present from a wide variety of media, the Neue Galerie Graz is dedicated to research into recent art history from the 19th century onwards, with a special focus on 20th century art and numerous connections up to the present day.

The long-held wish of the Neue Galerie Graz to create a Brus museum within the building for the world-famous Styrian artist Günter Brus, the so-called BRUSEUM, was realized in 2008 through a large collection purchase on the initiative of the then cultural representative of the state of Styria, Dr. Kurt Flecker.
