Description Destination

The well-known Schattenburg in Feldkirch, the city's landmark, houses a museum that was expanded and redesigned in 2010. Today it is one of the largest museums in the state of Vorarlberg. The Schattenburg was built around 750 years ago. In modern times it served as barracks and later as a poorhouse. It owes its rescue to the Feldkirch Local History and Museum Association, founded in 1912, which set up a museum in the castle as early as 1916/17.
The 18 rooms of the Schattenburg Museum provide an insight into the living culture of earlier centuries. An impressive collection of sacred and secular art can also be admired. Weapons from the Middle Ages to the Second World War are on display in the keep. Exhibits on the history of hand spinning and weaving can also be seen – with special tours. A tour of the medieval castle is an experience for the whole family. Through the leaded glass windows and from the observation platform of the keep there is also a beautiful view of the medieval town of Feldkirch and the Rhine Valley.

    Einmal quer durch die Burg

    Das Museum bietet einem die Möglichkeit die Innenräume der Schattenburg anzuschauen.
    Der Innenhof mit dem Restaurant ist frei zugänglich. Rund um die Schattenburg befindet sich ein Minigolfplatz mit Kiosk.

    Der Aufstieg lohnt sich auf alle Fälle und wird mit einem tollen Ausblick auf die Stadt belohnt. Es fährt aber auch ein Bus direkt zur Schattenburg und es gibt wenige Parkplätze (Werktags Kostenpflichtig).

    Im Museum selbst können verschieden Räume inkl. Möbel begutachtet werden. Das Highlight ist der Aufstieg auf den Turm, vorbei an zahlreichen Waffen und einer Ritterrüstung (leider gibt es nur eine einzelne).
    Für Kinder sicherlich ein Erlebnis, aber man muss sich im klaren sein, dass es sich hier um kein interaktives Museum handelt.

    Uns hat es hier gut gefallen und wir brauchten für einen Rundgang ca 1,5h.
