Ambras Castle Innsbruck
The wonderful world of the Renaissance
The Tyrolean sovereign Archduke Ferdinand II (1529-95), son of Emperor Ferdinand I, had the medieval Ambras Castle converted into a Renaissance palace for his wife Philippine Welser. To house his world-famous collections, he had a specially designed museum complex built, which is one of the most important forerunners of today's museums and has remained in its original location to this day.
The armouries contain rare tournament armour from the 15th century that belonged to Emperor Maximilian I, armour of famous generals from the 16th century, armour of the Archduke and the Innsbruck court and weapons from the Thirty Years' War.
In the Chamber of Art and Curiosities, this important Habsburg patron gathered precious and curious, rare and unusual items. Nature and art were combined in one room according to the program of the encyclopedic art chambers.
The Spanish Hall is one of the most important hall buildings of the Renaissance.
During Ferdinand’s time, the living quarters were located in the high castle. Today the following permanent exhibitions can be visited: History of the Castle, The Post is Here! Postmaster portraits of the Taxis-Bordogna and the Strasser glass collection. During the summer season, the Gothic Sculpture Collection and the Habsburg Portrait Gallery are also open. The paintings are by famous painters such as Hans Burgkmair, Lucas Cranach the Elder. J., Giuseppe Arcimboldo, Peter Paul Rubens and others.
