Description Destination

Scythe factory Deutschfeistritz Deutschfeistritz Hammers powered by water power, glowing iron and high craftsmanship once led to the creation of every farmer's most important work tool in the hammer mills: the scythe. At the Deutschfeistritz scythe factory, you can experience industrial history up close on a guided tour lasting around one hour, when the water wheel starts to roar and the hammers start their work with powerful blows. It is ‘Sense’, but nothing is over in the Scythe Factory in Deutschfeistritz – quite the opposite. The large factory, which in its heyday exported over 60,000 scythes all over the world, now serves as a museum. The rooms around the impressive production facility with its six giant water wheels are also an atmospheric and popular setting for a variety of events, ranging from theater performances and concerts to art exhibitions. The water wheels turn slowly and drive machines and heavy blacksmith hammers, which shape the glowing iron with dull blows. More than twenty precise and strenuous work steps are necessary to produce a high-quality scythe from a piece of steel weighing around 530 grams. The good quality of a scythe was of enormous importance for the reaper or mower who used it to cut grain and grass, and scythe production was a lucrative business. Today, combine harvesters, cutter bars and lawn mowers have largely replaced the scythe. And with the old scythe works it is "Sense" ... In the Übelbach valley, which was known for its silver mining in the Middle Ages, numerous iron processing companies and forges were established from the 16th century onwards. In 1849 Johann Pachernegg set up a scythe works in the town of Deutschfeistritz, which was in operation until 1984. An active cultural association has managed to preserve the original scythe works as a museum. During tours lasting around an hour, even the water wheels and hammers are brought back to life. The venerable walls also remain alive through the events of the "Cultural Association Sensenwerk Deutschfeistritz". Jazz sounds resound through the Zainhammerhalle, theater and music enchant the audience and resounding laughter fills the rooms during cabaret. On Walpurgis Night, the witches go out and perform a musical in the Scythe Factory. Indian summer on the last Saturday in September is a market day like in great-grandmothers' times. Homemade delicacies are offered for sale by women dressed in historical costumes, you can watch demonstrations of hammering and blacksmithing and enjoy the "scythe smith's steer". The New and Old Sensenwerk Gallery are open to the visual arts. Incidentally, the Sensenwerk Deutschfeistritz offers a special scythe service (during Indian summer and on request) so that today's scythes have the "right edge".
