Description Destination
The Monte Sceré area, like all Malcantone, has a rich mineral subsoil. It is believed that various metals were mined as early as the 18th century, particularly iron, lead, silver and gold. The first documented attempts at gold mining date back to 1785, but near the Lisora river there are orderly piles of pebbles, well washed, which bear witness to the remains of the exploitation of gold terraces dating back to Roman times (aurifodines). For this reason, Malcantone was listed as one of the largest mining areas in Switzerland. By 2015, the La Costa di Sessa mine was abandoned and forgotten by everyone. Hidden in the undergrowth, access to the mine was inaccessible, although the miners dug an underground labyrinth of more than 2 km long tunnels spread over 5 levels. The route, open to the public and passing through a 375-metre-long gallery called "Leonilde", allows you to discover the most spectacular and characteristic elements of the mining world. To this day, the mine is the only possible experience to experience the history of mining and gold mining in Switzerland.
