Collections of Antiquities and Glyptothek in Munich - Masterpieces of Antiquity at Königsplatz
The Glyptothek is Munich's oldest public museum. Opened in 1830, it houses one of the world's most important collections of Greek and Roman sculptures. Highlights of the collection include the Medusa Rondanini, the Barberini Faun and the Aeginetans. The founder of the collection, King Ludwig I, was able to purchase these valuable gable figures from the Aphaia Temple in Aegina at auction in 1813.
The State Collections of Antiquities are located on the south side of Königsplatz. It is home to one of the world's most important collections of Greek, Etruscan and Roman minor art: vases, bronzes, terracottas, glass and gold jewelry from the 3rd millennium BC. to around 400 AD. The richly decorated and elaborately painted clay vessels in particular bring to mind the imagery of Greek antiquity. The themes depicted are taken from myth as well as everyday life.
