Description Destination

The work and influence of the composer Franz Xaver Gruber is presented in a wonderful, new atmosphere. The museum is located in the former sacristan and choirmaster's house, where Franz Xaver Gruber lived and worked for 28 years. The exhibition focuses on the history of the creation and distribution of "Silent Night! Holy Night!" and the everyday life of the Gruber family in the Biedermeier period. On display are original furnishings from Gruber's apartment, three of the four surviving autographs of the composition "Silent Night! Holy Night!" and the "Authentic Reason". The collection also includes the guitar on which Joseph Mohr accompanied the first performance of the song in Oberndorf in 1818.
