Description Destination
Eggenberg Castle is a first-class work of art from the Baroque period, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a place where regional and world history meet. Architecture and furnishings combine here to create a symbolic representation of the universe, which was built to represent the princely Eggenberg family. The castle preserves a precious ensemble of historical interiors with an important cycle of over 500 ceiling paintings, both a panorama of universal history and a mirror of virtue in the spirit of the Baroque. It is an almost unadulterated spatial work of art in which the furnishing phases of the 17th and 18th centuries combine to form an ensemble of special experiential value.
Today, the castle is located in a spacious Romantic landscape park, which, with its precious trees, is one of the most important gardens in the country. It serves as a refuge of peace and relaxation as well as a valuable nature conservation and recreation area within the city.
This connection between culture and nature makes Eggenberg Castle a special museum location, a place for people for whom culture and nature are important.
In addition to the castle and its state rooms, there are three museums on site: the Old Gallery with a wide range of European art, the Coin Cabinet with a broad collection spanning the history of Styria's coins, and the Archaeology Museum with more than 1,200 objects.
