Description Destination

The composer Engelbert Humperdinck appears as a puppet and guides the audience through his opera in a child-friendly manner. Prof. Gerhard Tötschinger lends him his voice.
Creation of the opera:
Humperdinck's sister Adelheid Wette planned the fairy tale play as a domestic theater performance. She simply asked her brother to set some verses to music. When these were well received in the family circle, Wette and Humperdinck decided to turn them into a musical. Eventually, Humperdinck's enthusiasm became so great that he composed a full-length opera. The premiere on December 23, 1893 was already an extraordinary success. Many of the themes in Hansel and Gretel are often thought to be quotations from folk songs. Although Humperdinck used many folk song fragments, he actually only used three folk songs unchanged: Suse, dear Suse, what's rustling in the straw? There's a little man in the forest and little sister, be careful! However, many of the other melodies from the opera (e.g. Little Brother, Come Dance with Me... and the Evening Blessing) only later became folk songs.
