Description Destination
The "German Bee Museum Weimar" is, in the rich museum landscape of Weimar, a unique institution dedicated to nature and folklore.
The 'German Bee Museum' was founded in 1907 as the 'Reich Beekeeping Museum' by Ferdinand Gerstung. The museum's permanent exhibition, which is supplemented by changing special exhibitions, contains exhibits and explanations on biological, historical and technical aspects of beekeeping. In doing so, connections are made to other areas of human life, such as nutrition, art and folk art, religion and philosophy, politics and ecology. There is also a separate “children’s track”. Outside, you can visit bee houses, bee wagons and a bee pasture garden.
The Weimar Bee Museum has the largest collection of figure hives in the world and the last surviving wax hammer from 1637. It is also a training center for the region's beekeepers and hosts an annual bee market and an Advent market.
The beautiful grounds of the museum at the beginning of Weimar's Goethe Park invite you to visit at any time of the year. In the museum's own farm shop you can not only taste local honey in all its variety. You're sure to find one or two presents here - for example the beeswax candles handmade by the employees themselves.
The various free audio tours are entertaining for all age groups.
