Description Destination
Stucco ceilings, magnificent wood inlays and works of art by Hanau artists such as Anton Wilhelm Tischbein, Friedrich Bury and Moritz Daniel Oppenheim as well as sculptures by August Gaul - but also fairytale creatures, paper theater and modern inventions: all of this can be found in the Hanau Historical Museum. The museum is located in Philippsruhe Castle, which was modernized from 1875 to 1880 by Ferdinand Meldahl, one of the most important Danish architects of the 19th century.
Two new exhibitions show Hanau's departure into modernity and the founding of Hanau's New Town in 1597. The world-famous brothers Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm and their painter brother Ludwig Emil have been presented in the family interactive museum GrimmsMärchenReich since 2019. Another highlight is the only paper theatre museum in Germany, which will be accessible again in 2022 after a comprehensive redesign and will resume regular operations.
The castle garden not only invites you to relax in the green. There is also a sculpture park with works by internationally renowned sculptors (including Claus Bury, Michael Croissant, Franz Erhard Walther, James Reineking, Klaus Simon, Dorothee von Windheim). The castle café “Marie” and the castle gastronomy in the White Hall and vaulted cellar invite you to linger.
