Description Destination
From the oldest works of art in southern Baden to medieval Freiburg: the Archaeological Museum in the Colombischlössle, built in 1859/61, takes you on a journey through the millennia.
Whether Paleolithic female statuettes, precious items from Celtic princely graves, evidence of Roman achievements or regional finds from the early Middle Ages – the originals are vividly presented. Models and interactive stations illustrate the living conditions of each era.
Changing special exhibitions on special themes round off the repertoire.
The museum offers a diverse program for adults, families and school classes. People of all ages can experience archaeology at a Roman fashion show, on costume tours or in the experimental Stone Age workshop.

History of the house
The villa, built in the English Neo-Gothic style between 1859 and 1861 according to plans by the Freiburg architect Georg Jakob Schneider (1809 - 1883), stands on the former St. Louis Bastion, one of the few remains of Vauban's 17th-century city fortifications. The villa was soon named "Colombischlössle" after its owner, Countess Maria Antonia Gertrudis de Colombi y de Bode (1809 - 1863). From 1909 to 1924, the municipal antiquities collection was on display here. After being used as a building construction and registry office, Leo Wohleb ruled the independent state of Baden from here from 1947 to 1952. Afterwards, the city archives and the higher regional court moved in. Since 1983, the Museum of Prehistory and Early History, renamed the Archaeological Museum Colombischlössle in 2007, has been displaying its treasures here.
