Far away from the hustle and bustle of the big city, about 30 minutes south of Dresden, lies Rabenauer Grund, a gem for a family outing.
The starting point Freital-Weißeritzpark is easily accessible by bus, S-Bahn or car - this is where the Rabenauer Grund nature reserve begins. With a length of about 5 km, the wide, family-friendly hiking trail meanders along the shallow riverbed of the Rote Weißeritz. There is a lot to discover and listen to here in nature. Mossy rocks rise steeply and the tracks of the Weißeritztalbahn flank the path. You can hear the steam locomotive puffing from far away. At Rabenau train station, the self-service restaurant "Zum Wanderer" invites you to have a snack, then the choice is difficult: either continue hiking or pay a visit to the upper town via the "Sagenhafter Mühlberg" adventure trail. Younger hiking enthusiasts solve the "Remember What" puzzle on the adventure trail and crack the safe at the German Chairmaking Museum. The Stuhlbrunnen fountain fits picturesquely into the stone market of the upper town, dominated by the over 100-year-old town hall. Behind it is the city’s jewel box: the German Chairmaking Museum. In addition to local history, it shows the development of chair construction, some of which can be touched and tried out. The return journey can be made comfortably by bus, hiking or by taking the Weißeritztalbahn - an all-round successful family day.
