Architectural monument of the West Wall and war memorial
In the years before the Second World War, a 630-kilometer-long ring of fortifications made up of bunkers, tank traps, trenches and barbed wire entanglements was built on the western border of what was then the German Reich, stretching from the Lower Rhine to just before Basel - the West Wall.
Of the originally planned 22,000 bunkers and fortifications, between 17,000 and 18,000 were eventually built, including 32 so-called “B-works”. “B” means a thickness of the bunker ceiling and the outer walls of at least 1.50 m of reinforced concrete.
The B-Werk, built between 1938 and 1939 between Merzig and Besseringen, located directly on the access road to the Bundeswehr barracks "Auf der Ell", is the only one of these 32 B-Werks of the West Wall that survived the Second World War and the destruction caused by the occupying forces unscathed. It is still preserved in its entire original structure with all weapon domes. The military-technically remarkable monument, of which only the tank domes and the entrance area can be seen on the surface, extends over a length of 24.60 meters, a width of 17.80 meters and reaches two floors into the depths, individual rooms such as the well chamber are even deeper. The bunker complex with its 44 rooms of different sizes was uncovered by volunteers from the Reservist Association Merzig e.V. in 1997 through painstaking manual work and has been restored and maintained by the Merzig Local History Association since 2005. The sponsor is the district town of Merzig.
In addition to presenting the impressive engineering feat that was required to build such a facility using the technical means available at the time, the concept, which was jointly developed by the district town of Merzig, the Lower Monument Protection Authority and the Merzig Local History Association, also provides for the presentation of the two main focuses of the war memorial and the West Wall and Bunker Museum. The aim is to preserve the B-Werk Besseringen as a historical monument and memorial for future generations.
