Description Destination

The Felberturm, built in the first half of the 12th century, served as a residential and defensive tower for the noble lords of Velm. In 1415 it fell to the archbishops of Salzburg and in 1470 it was converted into a “service granary”. In 1812, the building, characterized by its herringbone masonry, was auctioned by the Bavarian government, became private property, and was transferred to the municipality in 1936. In 1963, the Felber Tower was renovated to house a local history museum.
From 2019 to 2021, the Felberturm Museum was redesigned and completely renovated. The exhibition on the subject of “pack trade” is located on the ground floor of the Felberturm. Here, the various mule tracks across the Tauern and the fateful stories of the mule drivers are brought to life and presented according to the most modern museum educational principles. In addition to the basic equipment of the muleteers, a special weather station will also be on display, which has surprises in store for visitors.
The first floor shows the development of Mittersill from the ban market to its elevation to town status, with a focus on jurisdiction, authorities, and the unique witch trial. Also covered are iron and leather crafts as well as the traditions of gingerbread making and inns.
The adjacent farmhouse depicts the everyday life of the farmers, who were often also muleteers. The former school building from 1609 now serves as an educational space and play workshop.
